Binance Executive’s Health Declines, Says Richard Teng

In a blog post released this week, Teng revealed that Gambaryan’s health has "deteriorated rapidly" as he marks six months of detention. The Binance compliance chief is reportedly suffering from severe health issues, including a herniated disc that has left him "unable to walk" and in "severe pain" ahead of his trial on money laundering charges scheduled for September 2.

Teng claims that despite the serious nature of Gambaryan’s condition, he has been denied access to both his legal counsel and his U.S. consulate representative. The Nigerian authorities are said to have withheld Gambaryan’s medical records for several months, despite a court order mandating their release.

“I am deeply concerned about the long-term, potentially irreversible physical and mental impact this horrific episode is having on Tigran,” Teng said. “I appeal once again for the Nigerian government to allow him to return to his family on humanitarian grounds, so he can receive appropriate medical treatment in the U.S., recover, and return to the healthy, active life he once enjoyed.”

Detention and Health Concerns

Gambaryan was detained in Nigeria in late February along with fellow Binance employee Nadeem Anjarwalla, reportedly for violating local laws. The duo had been in Nigeria for crypto policy discussions with government officials, who had promised them "safe passage."

Since his arrest, Gambaryan’s health has rapidly declined. In June, U.S. lawmakers French Hill (R-LA) and Cynthia Houlahan visited Gambaryan and discovered he was suffering from both malaria and double pneumonia.

“Tigran is a proud American who should not be subjected to such unjust treatment,” Teng continued. “It is my sincere hope that the American government and political leaders will exert their influence to bring Tigran home soon. The U.S. administration and legislators have the authority to designate Tigran as one of its 'unlawfully detained' citizens overseas, and there are compelling reasons to do so.”
